Learning which information to use in making a decision on plant status is based upon the operator’s knowledge and experience. How do you get experience for hopefully rare plant conditions? To have good situational awareness the operator must be able to accurately assess and predict how much time is available to solve the problem. That time horizon can change during the event. Another key component of situational awareness is having the correct mental model of what is happening within the plant. Building that mental model requires a good understanding of the fundamentals and cause and effect. So the operator can determine whether cues provided by the control system are accurate or not.
